Submitted by Sue Lowes on Jun 04, 2010

Dark molasses and spices cookies

Servings:
Group

Complexity:
Easy

Total Time:
1 hour

Ingredients:
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups all purpose flour

Directions:
Melt shortening in 3 or 4 qt. sauce pan over low heat. Allow to cool then add sugar, molasses and egg. Beat well. Sift flour, soda, spices and salt. Add to first mixture. Mix well and chill thoroughly.

Form 1 inch balls. Roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheet 2 inches apart. Bake in moderately hot (350) oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

Cook's Notes:
These are wonderful at Christmas time. Have been one of our favorites for years and the house smells so good when you are baking them.
